Inclusion & Accessibility

DISABILITY RIGHTS

ABILITY BEYOND BARRIERS

Disability is not a defect in the person; it is a defect in the environment. Rights of Persons with Disabilities (PwD) are about removing the physical and social walls that exclude millions from full participation in life.

From accessible transport to equal employment, the law mandates a society that adapts to its people, not the other way around. Inclusion is not a favor; it is a fundamental right.

The Spectrum of Ability

Disability is diverse. It includes Physical (Locomotor, Visual, Hearing), Intellectual (Autism, Learning Disabilities), and Medical (Thalassemia, Hemophilia, Acid Attack Survivors). Each group faces unique barriers, but all share the right to dignity.

The Social Model of Disability

  • Physical Barriers: Buildings with only stairs, buses without ramps, and websites without screen reader support.
  • Attitudinal Barriers: Pity, fear, or the assumption that PwDs are "helpless" or "eternal children."
  • Systemic Barriers: Denial of insurance, lack of sign language interpreters in courts/hospitals.
ACCESS: DENIED

4% Reservation

Free Education (6-18 Years)

Accessibility Mandate

All public buildings (Govt & Private) must be made accessible (ramps, wide doors, disabled-friendly toilets) within a stipulated time.

Part 4: The Barriers

Why Is Access Denied?

UDID Delays

Getting a Unique Disability ID (UDID) card involves complex medical assessments and bureaucracy, delaying benefits.

Retrofitting Cost

Old buildings claim it is too expensive to install elevators or ramps, ignoring the legal mandate.

Social Stigma

Families often hide disabled members due to shame, denying them education and social interaction.

Corporate Bias

Private companies hesitate to hire PwDs, assuming they will be less productive or require costly accommodations.

Information Access

Lack of sign language interpretation on TV/News and braille on medicine/products keeps PwDs uninformed.

YOUR ROLE

Don't park in disabled spots. Ensure your office/shop is accessible. Treat PwDs as equals, not objects of pity.
