Senior Citizen Welfare

OLD AGE RIGHTS

AGE WITH HONOR

Growing old is a privilege, but in a society racing towards the future, the elderly are often left behind. Senior Citizens face isolation, financial dependency, and abuse within their own homes.

But gray hair is not a license for neglect. Indian law mandates that children must maintain their parents. The twilight years should be filled with dignity, not despair.

The Collapse of the Joint Family

The traditional Indian joint family, once the safety net for the elderly, is fracturing due to urbanization. Parents are often left alone in villages or reduced to unpaid babysitters in cities.

Forms of Elder Abuse

  • Financial Exploitation: Coercing parents to transfer property deeds and then abandoning them.
  • Emotional Neglect: Silent treatment, isolation in a single room, and denial of interaction with grandchildren.
  • Medical Neglect: Refusing to buy medicines or take them to the doctor to save money.

Government Schemes

Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension

Elderline (14567)

Part 4: The Barriers

Why Do They Suffer in Silence?

Emotional Bond

Parents hesitate to sue their own children, fearing social stigma ("Log kya kahenge") or imprisonment of the son.

Property Traps

Once property is transferred without a "maintenance clause," it is legally difficult to get it back.

Digital Exclusion

Everything from banking to pension requires smartphones/OTP. Seniors struggle with tech, becoming dependent on others.

Mobility

Physically unable to travel to Tribunals or Police Stations to file complaints against abuse.

Geriatric Care

Severe shortage of geriatric specialists and affordable long-term care facilities (Old Age Homes).

YOUR ROLE

Spend time with elderly neighbors. Help them with digital tasks. Report abandonment to 14567.
