Ensure Free Legal Aid Reaches People Who Cannot Afford a Lawyer

Petition To:

Shri T. S. Akali
Member Secretary • Maharashtra State Legal Services Authority (MSLSA)
The justice system can be difficult to understand even for someone who has education, money and access to professional advice.

For a poor family, an undertrial prisoner, a daily-wage worker or someone living in a rural area, it can be overwhelming. A person may receive a legal notice and not understand what it means.

Someone may be arrested and not know whom their family should contact. A woman facing violence may want legal protection but have no money to hire a lawyer. A family may have a genuine legal problem but give up simply because professional help appears unaffordable.

Justice should not depend on a person's bank balance. Free legal aid exists to ensure that people who cannot afford legal representation are not left without assistance.

But a right is meaningful only when people know about it and can actually access it. Many people may not know where the nearest legal services office is, whether they qualify for assistance, whom to contact or what documents they need.

Others may reach out for help but face delays, confusing procedures or difficulty following up on their case.

We are asking the Government of Maharashtra and the concerned legal services authorities to strengthen access to free legal aid across the state.

People who qualify for legal assistance should be able to easily find information about available services through courts, police stations, prisons, government offices and local public-service centres.

District and local legal services offices should have clear contact information and a simple process for requesting assistance.

People in custody should be informed about their right to legal representation and should be able to contact legal aid services without unnecessary delay.

Legal-aid lawyers should be appointed in a timely manner, and beneficiaries should be given a practical way to communicate with them and understand the progress of their matter.

Special attention should be given to people who face additional barriers, including persons with disabilities, elderly citizens, women in crisis, migrant workers, rural residents and families with very limited income.

Legal awareness camps and community outreach can also help people seek assistance before their problems become more serious.

This petition is not asking for special treatment. It is asking for equal access to justice. A person should never be forced to face a court, legal proceeding or serious accusation alone simply because they are poor.

The law should protect everyone - not only those who can afford to pay for legal help. Please sign this petition and support stronger, easier and more accessible free legal aid across Maharashtra.
