Improve Safety and Lighting at Mumbai Suburban Railway Foot Overbridges

Mumbai’s suburban railway network is the lifeline of the city, serving millions of commuters every day. However, many foot overbridges (FOBs) connecting platforms remain poorly lit and lack essential safety infrastructure.

Late evening and early morning commuters often face dark staircases, broken lights, and limited security presence. Women, senior citizens, and students are particularly vulnerable in such conditions. Poor visibility not only increases the risk of harassment but also leads to accidents and falls, especially during peak rush hours.

According to commuter groups, several stations across the suburban network still have areas where lighting is insufficient and CCTV coverage is limited. These safety gaps make daily travel stressful and unsafe for thousands of passengers.

We respectfully urge the authorities, including the Indian Railways and Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation, to take immediate action by implementing the following measures:

• Install bright LED lighting on all foot overbridges and staircases
• Ensure CCTV coverage with regular monitoring
• Install emergency help buttons or helpline points
• Conduct routine maintenance to repair damaged railings and steps
• Increase security patrols during late evening hours
