Make Emergency Treatment Available for Injured Street Animals

Every day, dogs, cats, cattle and other animals are injured on our roads.

1. Some are hit by vehicles.

2. Some are badly wounded in fights or accidents.

3. Others are found sick, bleeding or unable to walk.

People often stop to help. They make phone calls, search for an animal ambulance, contact NGOs or try to find a veterinary hospital. But when an animal needs urgent treatment, even a few hours can make a difference.

The problem is that help is not always easy to find.

A person who finds an injured street animal may not know whom to call. A nearby veterinary facility may not be equipped to handle an emergency. Private treatment may be unaffordable for the person trying to help.

In some places, rescuers end up calling several organisations before finding someone who can take the animal.

Meanwhile, the animal continues to suffer. This should not depend entirely on whether a volunteer, feeder, NGO or kind stranger happens to be available at that moment.

We are asking municipal and other concerned local authorities to establish a clear and accessible system for emergency treatment of injured street animals.

This should include a publicly available helpline or contact point, coordination with veterinary hospitals and authorised animal welfare organisations, arrangements for transportation wherever reasonably possible and a clear procedure so that citizens know what to do when they find a seriously injured animal.

We are not asking for something unreasonable. We are asking for a basic response system for an animal that is hurt and cannot help itself.

Many people want to help animals when they see them suffering. The system should make it easier for them to do the right thing - not leave them searching for help while an injured animal lies on the roadside.

Please sign this petition if you believe injured street animals deserve timely treatment and that every city should have a clear way for citizens to get them emergency help.

A life should not be lost simply because nobody knew whom to call.
