STOP RAGGING

A CRIME, NOT A RITE

What begins as "introduction" often ends in trauma, injury, or death. Ragging is a systemic abuse of power that crushes the spirit of a student under the guise of tradition.

The Supreme Court of India has banned it. The UGC has criminalized it. It is not fun; it is a human rights violation. Silence protects the bully; your voice protects the future.

Defining the "Rag"

Ragging is any act that causes or is likely to cause insult, annoyance, fear, apprehension, or psychological harm. It includes teasing, abusing (verbal/physical), forcing students to perform lewd acts, or disrupting their studies/sleep.

The Psychology of the Bully

  • Sadistic Pleasure: Deriving enjoyment from the humiliation of a "fresher" to establish dominance.
  • Cycle of Abuse: "I was ragged, so I will rag." Seniors perpetuate the trauma they once suffered.
  • Bystander Apathy: The silence of the majority empowers the few aggressors.
STATUS: UNSAFE

Part 4: The Barriers

Why Does It Persist?

Fear of Seniors

"If I complain, they will make my life hell." Fear of retaliation keeps victims silent.

Reputation Protection

Colleges often hush up cases to protect their brand image, pressuring victims to "compromise."

"Personality Development"

The myth that ragging "toughens you up" or "breaks the ice" is a dangerous normalization of abuse.

Political Shielding

Student unions often protect aggressors, using political clout to stop police action.

Cyber Ragging

Harassment has moved online—trolling, leaking photos, and exclusion from class WhatsApp groups.

YOUR ROLE

Don't be a bystander. If you see it, report it. Use the anonymous helpline. Be the senior who mentors, not torments.
