Ear Cleaning (Infant Safety)Wellness, Mother & Child · WMC
Care Approach

Wipe Only the Outer Ear

Guidance & Use

Clean only the outside of the baby's ear with a warm, damp washcloth. Never insert cotton swabs, fingers, or any objects into the ear canal, as this can push cerumen (earwax) deeper or damage the delicate eardrum.

Safety & Precautions

SAFE home care. Earwax is natural and protects the ear; it typically cleans itself out.

When to Seek Medical Advice

If you suspect a wax impaction (a hard blockage of wax), or if the baby pulls at their ear, has a fever, or has fluid draining from the ear.

Ear Infection (Prevention Tips)Wellness, Mother & Child · WMC
Care Approach

Upright Feeding and Smoke-Free Environment

Guidance & Use

Feed the baby in a semi-upright position rather than lying flat, which prevents milk from flowing into the Eustachian tubes (the tubes connecting the middle ear to the throat). Keep the baby away from secondhand smoke, which increases ear infection risk.

Safety & Precautions

SAFE preventive care. Breastfeeding also provides antibodies that help protect against ear infections.

When to Seek Medical Advice

If the baby pulls at their ear, is unusually fussy, has a fever, or has fluid draining from the ear.

Safety & Precautions

SAFE developmental practice.

When to Seek Medical Advice

If the baby does not respond to their name, babble, or make eye contact by 9–12 months.

My Reading Checklist

Early Potty Training ReadinessWellness, Mother & Child · WMC
Care Approach

Look for Physical and Behavioral Cues

Guidance & Use

Wait for signs of readiness: staying dry for 2 hours, showing interest in the toilet, being able to pull pants up and down, and communicating the need to go. Starting before the child is ready often leads to frustration and prolonged training.

Safety & Precautions

SAFE developmental practice. Most children are ready between 18 and 30 months.

When to Seek Medical Advice

If the child is over 4 years old and shows no interest or ability to control their bladder or bowels.

Keep a Symptom Diary to Identify Triggers

Guidance & Use

Track the baby's diet, environment, and products used to identify what worsens the eczema. Common triggers include fragrances, wool, pet dander, extreme temperatures, and certain foods.

Safety & Precautions

SAFE preventive care. Identifying and avoiding triggers is the first step in managing eczema.

Eczema Flare-Up (Wet Wrap Therapy)Wellness, Mother & Child · WMC
Care Approach

Apply Moisturizer and Damp Clothing

Guidance & Use

After a lukewarm bath, apply a thick layer of prescribed emollient (moisturizing cream). Dress the baby in a layer of damp, warm cotton clothing, followed by a dry layer on top. This locks in moisture and reduces inflammation.

Safety & Precautions

SAFE medical care. CAUTION: Only perform wet wrap therapy under the guidance of a pediatrician or dermatologist.

When to Seek Medical Advice

If the baby becomes chilled, or if the skin shows signs of infection.

Exclusive BreastfeedingWellness, Mother & Child · WMC
Care Approach

Feed on Demand

Guidance & Use

Provide only breast milk for the first 6 months of life (no water, formula, or solid food). Feed the baby whenever they show hunger cues (rooting, sucking hands), typically 8–12 times in 24 hours.

Safety & Precautions

SAFE wellness practice. Recommended by WHO for optimal infant immunity and growth.

When to Seek Medical Advice

If the baby has fewer than 6 wet diapers a day, or if the mother experiences severe nipple pain or mastitis (breast tissue infection).

Gentle Massage and Compression

Wash hands thoroughly. Place the thumb and fingers in a 'C' shape about an inch behind the nipple. Gently press back toward the chest, then compress the fingers together, and release. Repeat rhythmically. This is useful for relieving engorgement or collecting colostrum.

Safety & Precautions

SAFE wellness practice. Should not cause sharp pain.

When to Seek Medical Advice

If you experience persistent pain, redness, or fever, which may indicate mastitis (breast tissue infection).

Gentle Massage and Rhythmic Compression

Guidance & Use

Wash hands thoroughly. Place the thumb and fingers in a 'C' shape about an inch behind the nipple. Gently press back toward the chest, compress the fingers together, and release. Repeat rhythmically. This is highly effective for relieving engorgement or collecting colostrum (the nutrient-rich first milk).

Safety & Precautions

SAFE wellness practice. It should not cause sharp pain.

When to Seek Medical Advice

If you experience persistent pain, redness, or fever, which may indicate mastitis (breast tissue infection).

Expressing Milk (Pump Flange Sizing)Wellness, Mother & Child · WMC
Care Approach

Measure Nipple and Choose Correct Flange

Guidance & Use

Measure the diameter of the nipple (excluding the areola) and choose a pump flange (the funnel-shaped part of the breast pump) that is 2-3 millimeters larger than the measurement. A correct fit ensures the nipple moves freely without rubbing the sides, preventing pain and maximizing milk output.

Safety & Precautions

SAFE wellness practice. An incorrect flange size is a leading cause of pumping pain and low milk supply.

When to Seek Medical Advice

If you experience persistent nipple pain, blisters, or white spots on the nipple after pumping.
